Here is information about visiting the former German extermination camp Auschwitz Birkenau for people with mobility difficulties.
The entire Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Due to the need for conservation and the preservation of the historical authenticity of the site and buildings, the possibilities for adapting them to the specific needs of visitors are limited.
- Parking (ul. Więźniów Oświęcimia 55)
The parking lot in front of the Museum includes parking spaces for people with disabilities, as well as restrooms for people with special needs.
Visitor Service Center (VRC) and entrance to the Memorial Museum.
The Visitor Service Center building is equipped with wheelchair ramps, and a platform for people with mobility difficulties is available inside, allowing people with mobility difficulties to move between levels. The VRC also has floor paths for the blind.
Restrooms for people with special needs are available in the building.
- The Museum offers free rental of wheelchairs or walkers. Such a need should be reported in advance.
- You can also report your need for a wheelchair or walker on the day of your visit at the ENTRY PASSES desk. If no one else has reserved one, they will be provided.
A free shuttle bus runs between the former Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau camps, which is available to individual visitors and visitors with mobility difficulties. The bus is equipped with a special platform enabling wheelchair access.
About the Former Auschwitz I Camp.
While visiting the Auschwitz I site, significant distances must be covered (approximately 1,300 meters).
The tour begins with a nearly 600-meter walkway, which includes a nearly 300-meter-long tunnel. Part of the tunnel gradually ascends, which may require more effort to navigate. This is the longest section of the tour that visitors cover without stopping during the first part of the Museum.
Due to the nature of the historic road and sidewalk surfaces at the former Auschwitz I camp, movement for people with mobility impairments is difficult and, in most cases, requires assistance.
The road surface is uneven, and there are sidewalks that impede the smooth passage of a wheelchair user. Access to the historic buildings housing exhibitions is limited. Historic external stairs located in front of the building entrances prevent the installation of permanent elements (ramps, elevators) to facilitate access for people with mobility disabilities.
Space in the former camp blocks, particularly in the corridors, is limited, making wheelchair maneuvering difficult.
For safety and evacuation reasons, the upper floors of the blocks and the basement of Block 11 are not accessible to wheelchair users.
The stairs leading to the upper floors have railings on one side only.
Former Auschwitz II-Birkenau Camp
- Entrance from Ofiar Faszyzmu Street 12
While visiting the Auschwitz II-Birkenau site, you must cover a considerable distance (over 2,000 meters).
The road surface is uneven due to its historical nature, making it difficult for people with mobility impairments to navigate.
Access to the site is via a driveway in the historic Death Gate building, with the entrance located at ground level. The Death Gate tower is not wheelchair accessible.
The Sauna building is accessible via external ramps and a raised floor inside the building. However, it is located 1.5 km from the main entrance. Currently, due to roof renovation, the building is closed to visitors.
The majority of the buildings are historic single-story wooden and brick barracks, with floor levels similar to those of the surrounding area. To facilitate access to the open brick barracks, wooden walkways were installed on the grounds to compensate for uneven terrain.
Between the ruins of gas chambers and crematoria II and III lies the International Monument to the Victims of the Camp, which consists of multiple paved levels. This makes navigating the monument with a wheelchair difficult.
Space in the brick barracks is limited, making wheelchair maneuvering difficult. Uneven floors in the wooden barracks pose a significant challenge.
In the Death Gate building and near the ruins of gas chamber and crematorium III, there are restrooms adapted to the needs of people with special needs.
“Old Theatre” (seat of the International Center for Education about Auschwitz and the Holocaust)
- ul. Leszczyńska 15, 32-600 Oświęcim
The building is equipped with elevators.
The entrance to the building is level with the ground (there are no steps or thresholds).
The doors leading to the rooms and lecture halls are wheelchair-friendly and have no thresholds.
The building is equipped with restrooms and parking spaces for people with special needs.
Audio guides with audio commentary are available for rent in the building, allowing blind or visually impaired visitors to navigate the site independently.
