What we do step by step:

  • Salt Mine is situated 15 km from Krakow city center and journey takes around 40 minutes up to 1 hour.
  • Upon the arrival to the parking lot, while your tour leader does all the formalities for you, you will get a break to prepare to go down the steps to the Mine.
  • Every visitor gets an entrance ticket to the mine.
  • The visit, assisted by a local guide, lasts around 2 hours.
  • One break in an underground café is included. After the visit the group gets ready to get on a miners’ lift to get back to the ground.

What we see:

  • Magnificent chambers chiselled out in rock salt.
  • Amazing underground saline lakes, majestic timber constructions and unique statues sculpted in salt.
  • Almost 3 kilometres of meandering corridors.
  • 800 steps to climb of which 350 have to be descended to reach the depth of 135 meters underground. Thus it is no surprise that till now, the Tourist Route, the main visiting route of the mine has been visited by millions  tourists every year from all over the world in search of adventures.

The route:

  • The journey starts at the Danilowicz Shaft.
  • You meet your guide, who during their excursion will tell you everything you want to know about the mine history and its secrets.
  • Travelling further and further into the mine chasm you discover unusual places and see with your own eyes the power of human hands that once excavated rock salt.
  • You will also have the opportunity to see a completely different image of the mine hearing the legend about Princess Kinga and how she brought the salt treasure to Polish land.
  • Half way along the route you will see the wondrous chapel dedicated to her and the saline works of art decorating the chapel.
  • Will be a moment for reflection hearing the music of Chopin accompanying a light and sound spectacle on the shores of one of the saline lakes.
  • At the end, when we have tasted the specialities offered in the underground tavern.
  • We continue our journey to the Krakow Salt Works Museum.
  • We will be able to return to the surface in a lift at the end 🙂

Attention! Please. New safety regulations in the Salt Mine:

  • maximum size of luggage: 30x20x20 cm.
  • No bottles or containers allowed.

And a brief history of the Mines:

  • The underground cities. Created by nature, but refined by man. Both Salt Mines are wonderful.
  • Salt Mine in Wieliczka and Salt Mine in Bochnia Town situated 30 km from Kraków, only.
  • That is 15 km longer distance then Wieliczka Salt Mine.
  • If you have little more time and wish to visit real old style mine –  I am inviting you to see the real, harsh route of sightseeing in the Salt Mine in Bochnia. …
  • Salt Mine in Wieliczka is wonderful, amazing, surprising, worth to pay expensive visiting.
  • The salt mine was subsidized with a huge sum of money, years ago. That is why new corridors, new renovations, wonderful innoventions useful for visitors were prepared.
  • Both Salt Mines were established in order of king Kazimier the Great in 14 c. but Bochnia Salt Mine was before Wieliczka Salt Mine :). Yes, it is truth! Both Salt Mine served for Polish kingdom and to the King. Brings the glory and huge money to the Polish kingdom which was in ruin after when Poland was divided into provinces and needed new fresh skills and money first of all.
  • The both Salt Mines under The King Kazimierz gave the employment to the huge number of workers which were gathering in an area of Wieliczka town and Bochnia town. They were coming from all over the Poland and not only, to work there.
  • The Salt was treated as a GOLD in that time, and it was very big part of the business and royal income.
  • Very well known supervisors of both Salt Mines were from jewish community like Mr. Levkov. Still we have the street named after him in Kraków. That is proof how strong connections with jewish community existed.

I present the offer of Bochnia Salt Mine which is situated 60 km from Krakow City.

I know that it may seem to you that the offers of two salt mines may be too much, that you prefer well-known objects coming to Krakow for the first time and the city itself also has a lot to offer, but you never know if the offer of the Bochnia mine it will not attract people who are looking for unique attractions (tourist route with an underground boat crossing), niche, but at the same time older than the most popular objects and also inscribed on the UNESCO list. We want to offer you a specific product, which is the Tourist Route with an underground boat crossing.

Which contains ? :

  • before the descent, a demonstration of the work of an antique steam engine
  • exit to the mine by a mining elevator (the so-called “cage”)
  • it takes 16 people at one time on two levels of the elevator
  • cable car travel approx. 1 km
  • visiting the route enriched with multimedia exhibition (chambers: St. Kinga’s chapel, Mysiur chamber, treadmill chambers, Dobosz inter-level)
  • descent to the Wazyn chamber 250 m underground (time to rest)
  • crossing to a boat crossing (the crossing itself takes about 15 minutes)
  • passage to the pit and exit from the mine.
  • Duration: approx. 4 hours
